Year 2: Jellyfish & Seals

Welcome to Year 2!

Click below for the topics being studied this term by Year 2.

Year 2 had a great time this week visiting the aquarium!  We learnt lots of facts and loved seeing the different ocean creatures.  Did you know that a jellyfish isn't a fish?  It's a type of plankton!

Reading
Reading will be a main focus in Year 2 and your support at home is greatly appreciated.  The types of questions you can ask your child when they read to you can be found below; these questions will develop their understanding of the texts they are reading.  Some useful websites about helping your child to read can also be found below.

Spelling
Spelling tests take place on a Wednesday. The new weekly spellings are uploaded to www.spellingshed.com, please access this using your child's login details (in their spelling books).

Phonics Within Spelling Shed, digital games and assessment tools for phonics are available. These support the teaching of phonics via Phonics Shed but also give Spelling Shed users an additional set of tools to help develop children's phonics skills.. Our games start from pre-reading skills such as environmental sounds, include decoding-based games and even a flying superhero hare.

Maths
From the beginning of the Spring term, the children complete a times tables test each week.  They have 10 minutes to complete as many questions as they can.  There are lots of ways to support your child with learning their times tables; teaching them any games, 'quick tricks' or other strategies you know will help to increase their fluency and recall, and support their learning in other maths topics.

Children will begin completing times tables tests in Terms 3 and 4.  The following links show you examples of these tests.

The times tables tests in Terms 5 & 6 will also include related division facts.  The following links show you examples of these tests.

For further information on other maths methods taught in our school, please see the Maths Calculation Policy on our Maths Curriculum webpage.

Children can practise their maths skills using their Sumdog login details. Please visit www.sumdog.com

SATs

Year 2 SATs will be completed throughout the month of May.  We have gathered some resource packs that you may find useful for practising the skills they have learnt this year.  Any additional support you can provide at home would be greatly appreciated.

Examples of what your child will be expected to achieve and past papers can be found here.

For additional opportunities to practise maths skills at home, please see the websites below.
