Eggbuckland Vale Primary School & Nursery

Thinkers and Learners

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development

British Values

We are part of a British society, and it is important to Eggbuckland Vale Primary School that children learn the universal principles of:

  • Self-help
  • Self-responsibility
  • Democracy
  • Equality
  • Equity
  • Solidarity
  • Openness
  • Honesty
  • Social responsibility
  • Caring for others

We achieve these aims through:

Creating an open, inclusive ethos whereby children can be themselves, and develop courtesy, respect and tolerance for others

Promoting mental health and wellbeing

Promoting equality of opportunity

Having a clear code of conduct, whereby children understand right from wrong, and are able to take responsibility for their actions

Team work and collaboration across the school

Democratic leadership opportunities – through the School Council

Development of pupil leadership

Promotion of service families

Providing the only specialist provision for Hearing Impaired children for the city

Challenging intolerance

Providing a broad and balanced Curriculum:

Opportunities which celebrate diversity

Learning about our nation and its heritage, for example finding out about the Victorians and their legacy

National heroes such as Florence Nightingale and Darwin and local heroes such as Brunel, Scott, Anning, Christie

Use of our local area, studying Plymouth and Dartmoor as part of our local area

A sense of community responsibility; working with other agencies such as police and fire service

Learning about cultures and faiths; how are we different from one another, and how are we the same?

Understanding Plymouth as part of a global community; learning about and communicating with children from across the world

This document should be read in conjunction with the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural audits listed below.

Religious Education

A programme of Religious Education based on the Plymouth agreed syllabus is taught. Children meet this partly through the units of work, some of which are based on R.E. topics and partly through weekly activities. There is a strong moral and social dimension to our work in R.E. as well as helping children to understand the basis of the Christian and other religions. Through R.E. children learn of the beliefs and customs of Christianity and other world religions.

Collective Worship

In accordance with the Education Act there is a daily act of collective worship in whole school, key stage or class groups. This is separate from our Religious Education programme although there may be times when assemblies are used for both purposes.

Governors recognise the right of parents to withdraw their children from religious education and daily worship.
