'Starfish' Year 1

The subjects being looked at during the second half of the Summer Term 2019 (Term 6) can be seen below.

The pace plans for Year 1 for this half term can be seen below. Each pace plan tracks when particular areas of learning will be in focus across a term.

The Year 1 children have become time travellers! A tardis has landed in our area and we have built our own time machines! Incredibly, objects from the past keep being delivered to our classrooms through these machines. So far we have received a picture of Edward Lear, an owl and a pussycat. We thought it was a clue that Edward Lear wanted us to learn his poem, so we did! We hope you enjoy our videos.

Some creatures that suspiciously resemble the Loch Ness Monster have been sighted on our playground! the year 1 children have built incredible traps to try to catch them, but no luck yet! Look at the amazing newspaper reports the children have written about the latest sightings of Nessie.

Look at our BSL superheroes! Year 1 have had a fantastic Deaf Awareness week. We have practised signing the alphabet, colours, numbers and our emotions and are now signing as much as we can to celebrate this amazing language. Fingers crossed we win the signing trophy next week too!

Year 1 have also been busy learning about maps and their symbols. We tied this in with our learning about the weather and transformed ourselves into amazing weather forecasters! Listen to the amazing language we are using to describe the weather and aren't you impressed by how we can describe the different parts of the country?!

In PSHE Year 1 have been learning about how to stay safe. An important aspect of this learning is developing our understanding of road safety. This week the children have watched a road safety video, practised their skills on the playground and using small world equipment and have then gone on a walk to put their knowledge into practise. When you are walking to school together, see if your child can explain to you how to stay safe near roads.

All the year 1 families were so amazing and brought in so much junk for us to use in our "Monstersaurus" unit. We thought you would like to see what we managed to create! It took a whole lot of designing skills, some very clever shaping and joining and just a little pinch of magic and these monsters came to life!

In year 1 we have been learning about Stickman and have been inspired to create our own Stickman poem. We thought of our own rhyming couplets, practised lots and then performed our poem. We hope you like it!

Year 1 are learning about how to describe a setting so we took a trip to our local woods. We felt very inspired by the book "The Wild Woods," written by Simon James and managed to think of incredible adjectives to describe the things we saw. We had lots of fun squelching in the mud and splashing in the river too!

The Year 1 children have had a wonderful week of learning in our whole school "Gingerbread Man" Literacy topic. We met the Little Old Lady who asked us to help her find that cheeky fox. So we made incredible Wanted posters and laid traps to catch him. We thought the traps would be more effective if we made gingerbread men to entice him in, but we made enough for us to eat too!
